AOB

There was a discussion on the future of Sunday cricket at Eastwood. For the last couple of years we have struggled to get a side out and have had to call off several fixtures. We have 8 fixtures arranged for 2012 and it was agreed that we should not look for any more this year. We will try to fulfil those we have arranged but it will depend on player availability. No further decision was made.

2012 SEASON

We enter the season on an optimistic note the 1’s to regain their spot in Div 2 the 2’s to gain the promotion they narrowly missed last season and most importantly more settled sides in the 3’s and 4’s and get out of the lowest divisions.

To that end the Friendlies get underway on April 21st with a visit to Aythorpe Roding followed on the 28th with two home games against Rayleigh and Tillingham.

The league gets underway on May 5th with the 1’s entertaining Boreham the 2’s at Woodham Mortimer and the 3’s and 4’s against Wickham 1’s and 2’s respectively ( hopefully they will be minus their Irish World Cup player ).

Please therefore make sure your availability is entered on the website.

On the subject of availability as you may be aware the club in line with many others in the area is particularly short of players on a Sunday if you know anybody interested in playing on Sunday  or you yourself are please let the Team Secretary know.

As with other seasons the club will be looking to run a number of social events during the season these will include the hugely successful Cricket Week in early August, a six- a-side competion.

The club have also been selected to host the U11’s Piri Piri Kwik Cricket festival in May (more details to come).

Obviously it vitally important club members and friends support these events.

DEVELOPMENT

During the winter informal discussions have taken place about the possibilities of improving/extending the Club House facilities and/ or the wooden pavilion in order to bring this about the club would need to obtain funding and while certain avenues are being explored any ideas from the membership is always welcome.

Match Selection

Eastwood Cricket Club aims to be fair to all members in selecting the team for league, midweek and friendly fixtures.

Players must be registered and this includes paying that season’s subs, to be selected for league games.

Selection priority will go to players who have registered and paid subs.

Please remember that the club requires subscription fees to cover your insurance and essential equipment for the game.

It is important that players include their details on the website and update their availability as it changes. This is the information that the captains will use to pick the team.

With an increasing numbers of teams and lots more players, this becomes increasingly important. If you do not have web access or have limited access please telephone the captains who will update your availability for you.

Please ensure the website has your up to date details and log on.  To record your availability, please log on to the website by entering your username and password and click on the Availability button (top right of middle).

Team selection is made via the website and an email/text is sent to those selected.

It is important that you confirm your place in the side ideally via the website or by telephoning the captain as soon as you can.

If your availability changes following confirmation you must inform the captain as soon as possible so a replacement can be found.

If you assign yourself as ‘unavailable’ but then subsequently become available, please advise the captain but don’t assume that there is still a place in the team available.

Youth Section

Winter training continues at SHSB until the end of April when we will continue training outdoors at Belfairs. We will confirm dates and times nearer the date.

Youth matches start with a friendly against Westcliff for the U15’s on Monday 30th April, with the league starting on Sunday 6th May for the U13’s. The U15’s first league match is a home tie against SOSEMT on the 10th May. All the youth fixtures are available for you to view on the website.

Please make sure your details are up-to-date on the main website as all communications for the matches will be via email. Please see the Match Selection item above.

Memories

Brian Burns has very kindly provided me with a substantial amount of club memorabilia dating back to the early eighties which I am gradually reviewing with a view to publishing extracts in future newsletters.

As a start my eye caught Eastwood Chronicle of May 16th 1989 written by one Nigel Armitage who as many recall had a somewhat caustic pen particularly as far as my batting was concerned.

I had new man Ian Roake (ex Thorpe Bay ) to thank as he scored a cultured 85 off 113 balls.
